Several weeks back it happened again. I remember it happening last year- coinciding with the warmth of Spring…The trucks parade back and forth for hours. What these trucks are hauling is one of the most controversial substances on the American landscape…sludge (aka: biosolids)

Like the seed that dies, that gives itself up for life to come forth, JESUS as The Seed was placed in a tomb. Buried in darkness, for three days He ‘germinated’. Ironically, when He rose from the dead Mary Magdalene thought He was the gardener.

Perhaps one reason God created human beings to tend the garden is because God knew that it is in its midst that we connect most intimately to the character and ways of our Creator. Yet much theology about creation care focuses more on preserving wilderness areas and overcoming pollution than on the joy of gardening.

If I could impose my will on every American for the sake of the environment it wouldn’t be to change light bulbs or mandate carbon footprints. My mandate would be for every American to start a garden and grow their own food

Many of the oldest established community gardens were started by people that claimed some abandoned space and started planting there. I love the idea of sneaking life into dead places. It sounds a lot like the gospel to me.
