The Work of the People: In this video, New Zealand urban missiologist, churchplanter, community organizer, writer and theologian-philosopher,Viv Grigg talks about how cooperative economics can be central to a more radical and embodied Christian discipleship. What is so disturbing about Viv’s word is that it challenges many of our preconceived notions about what it means to be a follower of Jesus in America and the Western world. There is so much we could change about the way we live in order to enact a more faithful pursuit of Jesus – but is it too costly?

A group of friends and I started asking ourselves questions along these lines a few years ago up in Portland. We got as far as discussing the theory, and recognizing the potential, but we were either too distracted or too scared to take into the realm of the practical: “Okay, now how do we make this a reality?” Now that I’ve seen the video, I am inspired and challenged, but still a little overwhelmed. Thanks?
Hey John,
I think we’re there too- hearing these kinds of ideas and asking ourselves how we can break out of the cultural mold that is keeping us from a more kingdom-oriented means of living. I think it all starts with prayer- like a seed – and it can grow from there as we seek the hidden path that GOD wants to take us down. -shalom brother!
What was particularly interesting, that you rarely hear, is what unity is truly based upon. The Holy Spirit. Not doctrine, not theology, not culture, not politics, not race, but that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is the prime mover.
Hey Simeon! I agree- Mr. Grigg’s insight is right on. Too often we try to attain likemindedness and unity through idealism or a shared cause- but true community and well formed ‘ecclesia’ comes by way of our following the Holy Spirit and obeying Jesus in real-time. We keep hearing about ‘the Searwars’- we need to get together sometime – maybe you’all can come over to George and Dot’s for lunch soon. Big thanks for the milk by the way!
