NOTHING on this planet (and no planets to begin with), what exactly was there? And why exactly did creation come into existence? (…Hold up. These are big questions. Can we really even begin to know anything so far beyond the scope of our human minds?) As it turns out, the Scriptures don’t leave us completely in the dark about this time. If we look in various places sprinkled throughout the Old and New Testaments, we find out that a perfect and beautiful fellowship existed before creation even began. Proverbs 8 speaks the words of Jesus:
“The Lord formed Me from the beginning. Before the mountains were formed, before the hills, I was born—before He had made the earth and fields and the first handfuls of soil. I was there when He set the limits of the seas so they would not spread beyond their boundaries. And when He marked off the earth’s foundations, I was the architect at His side. I was His constant delight, rejoicing always in His presence. And how happy I was with the world He created; how I rejoiced with the human family!” (v 22, 24, 29-31 NLT)So here we find there was LOVE, REJOICING, and CREATIVITY! Jesus Himself later tells us that there was GLORY and LOVE.
“Now Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the GLORY which I had with You before the world was.” (John 17:5 NASB) “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am and to see my GLORY, the glory you have given me because you LOVED Me before the creation of the world.” (John 17:24 NIV)John writes to us that there was also UNITY and LIFE.
“The Only begotten God was in the bosom of the Father” (1:18 NASB). “In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word was WITH God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God….In Him was LIFE and the life was the light of men.” (1:1-2,4 NASB)And when Jesus was here on earth, He tells us that there was UNITY and perfect DEPENDENCE.
“The Father and I are ONE” (John 10:30 NLT) “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by Himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything He is doing.” (John 5:19-20)The Holy Spirit was also part of this unity. Jesus calls him “the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father.” (John 15:26 NASB) The Three of them are so united in fact, that they are actually ONE. So then, if we go through and collect what we’ve gathered about this before-time-fellowship, we find that all of creation sprang forth from a perfect fellowship characterized by UNITY, LOVE, CREATIVITY, LIFE, DEPENDENCE, REJOICING and GLORY! (And probably much more…) As we move forward into time, anything this Fellowship creates will express these characteristics. Since God Himself is an interconnected Fellowship, He (They) will make an interconnected creation. Since God Himself is full of glory, His (Their) creation will be GRAND, MAGNIFICENT, and full of creativity. We also find that the Lord’s purpose in creating us was to draw us into His perfect fellowship. (John 17:22-24) In part two of this series, there will be more about this.
